How it works

IPL uses broad-spectrum light energy to target pigment and vascular concerns beneath the skin’s surface. The light is absorbed by excess melanin and visible blood vessels, breaking them down so the body can naturally clear them over time. Because IPL does not damage the surrounding skin, it’s an effective option for improving discoloration, redness, and overall skin tone with a series of treatments.

everything you need to know

  • What to expect with an IPL treatment?

An IPL photofacial appointment typically takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on the treatment area. You may feel quick, warm pulses of light during treatment, often described as a light snap, but the integrated cooling system helps keep the experience comfortable. Mild redness or warmth is common afterward, and most patients return to normal activities right away.

  • What is the healing process like after IPL?

    • After treatment, you may experience mild redness or warmth for a few hours. Pigmented spots may temporarily darken over the first few days before gradually flaking off or fading.

When will I see results from IPL?

    • Many patients notice brighter, clearer skin within 7–10 days, with continued improvement over the following weeks as the skin tone evens out.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

    • Most patients benefit from a series of 3–5 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart, depending on goals.

How long do IPL results last?

    • Results can last several months with proper sun protection. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to help prevent new pigment or redness from forming.

  • Most common treatment areas:

    • Face

    • Neck

    • Chest

    • Hands

  • What to Do Before an IPL Photofacial:

    • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for 2–4 weeks before treatment.

    • Discontinue retinol, tretinoin, and exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) on the treatment area for 3–5 days prior.

    • Avoid waxing, threading, or depilatory creams on the treatment area for 1–2 weeks before treatment.

    • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin and no lotions or oils on the treatment area.

    • Inform your provider of any recent antibiotics, skin treatments, or changes in your medical history.

    • IPL is not recommended on tanned skin. Please reschedule if you have had recent sun exposure.

Always consult your primary care provider regarding medications, recent illness, and medical conditions before receiving any aesthetic treatment. Treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  • What to Do After an IPL Photofacial:

    • Mild redness or warmth is normal and typically resolves within a few hours.

    • Pigmented spots may darken temporarily before fading or flaking off.

    • Avoid sun exposure and apply mineral SPF daily to protect treated skin.

    • Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.

    • Do not use retinol, acids (AHAs/BHAs), exfoliants, or active skincare for 5–7 days.

    • Keep skin hydrated with a gentle cleanser and moisturizer.

    • Do not pick or scrub at darkened spots, allow them to shed naturally.

    • Makeup can typically be applied after 24 hours, once the skin has fully calmed.

Post-care instructions may vary depending on your individual treatment. If you have any questions or experience anything unexpected, please reach out to your provider.
